The film criticism game is a crap-shoot when you’re on a staff of a few different writers; you put your hand up for a bunch of films and some come your way, others to the rest of the team.
Young Adult slipped through my fingers and, initially, I wasn’t that disappointed. When I exited the screening, I felt strangely unmoved (and, thus, bummed, since I’m one of those assholes that reads screenplays and
he threw himself repeatedly against my boot, your honoursomeone sent it to me, and I really loved it, and found Reitman’s choice of scenes to cut/pare back perplexing). Oh well, I shrugged, at least I don’t have to review it.But now, after a month or so of letting it sit with me and thinking about how excellent Charlize Theron is as Mavis and how breathtaking some of the very familiar awfulness is, god I wish I was reviewing it.
I’m so excited about seeing this; from the trailer she reminds me of girls from school - but times a million on the bitch scale.
